Career įollowing a role with the National Security Agency (NSA), Sykes began her stand-up career at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC, where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience in 1987. Sykes attended Arundel High School in Gambrills, Maryland, and went on to graduate from Hampton University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha. According to historian Ira Berlin, a specialist in the history of American slavery, the Sykes family history is "the only such case that I know of in which it is possible to trace a black family rooted in freedom from the late 17th century to the present." Her ancestry was traced back to a 1683 court case involving her ancestor, Elizabeth Banks, a free white woman and indentured servant, who gave birth to a biracial child, Mary Banks, fathered by a slave, who inherited her mother's free status. Sykes' family history was researched for an episode of the 2012 PBS genealogy program Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr. Her mother, Marion Louise (née Peoples), worked as a banker, and her father, Harry Ellsworth Sykes, was a U.S. Her family moved to Maryland when she was in third grade. Men in Black II’s Biz Markie, Pootie Tang’s Wanda Sykes, Fist Fight’s Tracy Morgan, and Ralph Breaks the Internet’s Sarah Silverman all lent their signature sounding voices to the series. The original series was made even funnier by the high-quality voice talent involved. On the revival, Comedy Central said – “the world’s favorite profane puppets will be pranking on phones, social media, e-sport platforms and any venue where trouble can be made.”Ĭrank Yankers will be the first project Jimmy Kimmel’s Kimmelot produces. Something the show’s creators anticipated as the revival will incorporate modern forms of communication. In today’s increasingly digital world, it seems a lot more difficult to fall victim to a phone prank. Pranking people’s phones was fun, and falling victim to a prank call wasn’t out of the ordinary. Comedy Central believes the show will do well again as evident by their 20-episode order.Īt the height of the show’s popularity, most cell phone owners favored brands like Nokia, Blackberry, and a personal landline was still essential. The original show worked well, and it seemed to be inspired by popular comedy The Jerky Boys. Crank Yankers featured some often-hilarious prank calls that were reenacted by Puppets that would have looked at home on Sesame Street but with names like Dick Birchum, Special Ed, and Gladys Murphy. It first premiered on Comedy Central in 2002. The popular comedic series was created and produced by Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, and Daniel Kellison. Comedy Central is reviving the series Crank Yankers.
